At Westwood Elementary School, we believe that reading opens doors to learning, imagination, and endless possibilities! For students in third, fourth, and fifth grades, developing strong reading habits is especially important as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
Reading regularly helps students build vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, improve writing skills, and develop critical thinking abilities. It also encourages creativity, builds confidence, and helps students become more independent learners. Whether students enjoy mysteries, adventures, graphic novels, biographies, or nonfiction books, every reading experience provides an opportunity to grow.
Our Westwood Elementary School Library offers a variety of books for students to borrow and enjoy. However, reading opportunities do not have to end when students leave school! Families are encouraged to visit the Abbeville County Library, where students can discover even more books, explore new interests, and participate in exciting library programs and events.
The Abbeville County Library is a wonderful community resource that supports literacy and lifelong learning. In addition to borrowing books, students and families can take advantage of activities and special events offered throughout the year. These experiences provide opportunities for children to learn, create, and connect with others while developing a love of reading.
Parents and guardians can make a big difference by encouraging their children to read for at least 20 minutes each day. Reading together, discussing books, visiting the library, and allowing children to choose books that interest them are simple ways to make reading an enjoyable part of everyday life.
We encourage all of our Panther Cubs and their families to explore the many opportunities available through both our school library and the Abbeville County Library. Be sure to check out Abbeville County Library's calendars for adults and youth below! There may be something exciting for your family to enjoy.
Together, our school, families, and community can help our Panther Cubs develop a lifelong love of reading.
